It was one of the three allied scheduled airlines operating in Germany at West Berlin’s Tempelhof and Tegel airports during the Cold War from 1950 until 1990. Later on, it has acquired the operations of French domestic carrier Air Inter and International rival Union de Transports Aeriens in 1990.

Air France has served as a French national carrier after merging with KLM in 2003 for seven decades. Air France and its local subsidiary Hop has carried 52 million passengers in 2018. Air France has operated with a mixed fleet of Airbus and Boeing worldwide for long destination routes and used the Airbus A320 family for short destination routes.

Air France has demonstrated its A380 family of Airbus by flying to New York city JKF’s airport from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport on 20th November 2009. Air France Hop is operating mostly on domestic routes and European scheduled routes with a fleet of regional jet aircraft. 

History of Air France

Air France was established on 7th June 1993 with an association of Air Orient, Air Union, Societe Generale des Transports Aeriens, Compagnie Generale Aeropostale, and Compagnie Internationale de Navigation Aerienne. Among these airlines, SGTA was the first commercial airline in France established in 1919 called Lignes Aeriennes Farman.

The constituent members of Air France have developed an extensive network across Europe to French colonies in North Africa and distant areas. Air France has shifted its air operations to Casablanca, Morocco during World War II.

Air France has attached French manufacture twin-engine Potez 62 aircraft to its fleet accommodating 12 to 14 passengers in a two-compartment cabin in 1936. Potez 62 was a high wing monoplane built with the wooden fuselage and composite coating while the wings were fabric covered with a leading metal edge. It was equipped with Hispano-Suiza V-engines used on routes in Europe, the far east and South America.

Potez 62 cruising at 175 miles per hour was a strong and reliable aeroplane for Air France and remained in service till Second World War which was also used by Free French Air Force. All the France air transport companies were nationalized on 26 June 1945.

A committee of the France Government has approved the management of the entire French air transport network on 29 December 1945. Air France has appointed its first flight attendants in 1946. The same year Air France has opened its first air terminal at Les Invalides in central Paris.

Air France’s first operation and engineering base were located at Paris Le Bourget Airport in 1946. The network was claimed to be the longest in the world with 160,000 km. Societe Nationale Air France was founded on 1st January 1946. European routes were started to be served initially by a fleet of Douglas DC-3 aircraft.

Air France has begun its direct flights between Paris and France through its refuelling stops at Shannon and Gander. Douglas DC-4 piston-engine has covered the route in just 20 hours. Air France’s network has stretched east from New York, Buenos Aires to Shanghai and Fort de France.

Air France head office is now located in the Roissypole complex on the grounds of Charles de Gaulle Airport and in the commune of Seine-Saint-Denis and Tremblay-en-France near the city of Paris.

Air France United States offices are in the 125 West 55th Street building in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Air France-KLM head office for UK and Ireland operations is situated in Plesman House in Hatton Cross. Now Air France has shifted its office from Hounslow to Hatton.
