Pets Allowed:

According to United Airlines Policy, only small dogs, cats, household birds and rabbits are permitted to travel inside the united aircraft cabin for the flights within the continental United States (excluding Hawaii).

Age Criteria:

The pets traveling in United Airlines must be at least four months old to be eligible and the pet cage must fit under the passenger seat. The cage of pets will be considered as another checked baggage. If the pet is a cat or dog, then only one pet is permitted in a single cage. But yes, there is an exception for small birds as two birds are permitted to travel in a single cage. United Airlines also offer a provision to buy extra space for the second pet to be in the carrier if needed.

Restricted Routes

If you want to travel with your pet in a cabin when your destination is the United Kingdom, then it is not possible as it isn’t allowed to travel with an in-flight pet cabin. United Airlines does not permit pets to travel in the cabin of flights for Hawaii, New Zealand, Guam, Australia and some other countries. So, pets are allowed to travel in Cargo. Pet travel services are not provided when it comes to the destinations like Nigeria, Dubai, and Lagos. Pets cannot travel in the first or business class of the Boeing 757, 747, 777, and 767 aircraft as there is not enough space for the pet carriage to fit under the Passenger’s seat.

Age Criteria

All dogs and cats traveling domestically in United Airlines must be at least 10 weeks old and should weigh at least 2 pounds. United Airlines does not permit any pet prior to the 30 days of rabies vaccination for all its international flights.

Documents and Certificates Required

  • The latest rabies vaccination certificate must be provided at least 30 days prior to the original travel date.

Pick Up and Drop Off

Temperature restrictions

According to the United Airlines Policy, Pet reservations at the listed below airports are not permitted during the period of May 1  to September 30 due to high temperatures: Phoenix(PHX), Tucson(TUS), Las Vegas, and Palm Springs(PSP). Pet reservations are not accepted for the itinerary that includes Shanghai or Chengdu during the period of June 15 to September 15.

United Airlines Pet Carrier Size/Dimensions Requirement

According to the United Airlines Policy, Passengers can travel with two cats or dogs in a single cage if they both are under the age of 6 months and of the same species and size. This airline does not permit the series 700 kennels.

The carrier/cage in which you will place your pet during travel must have proper metal locks both at the top and bottom. Clips on the top or bottom of the carrier/cage are not allowed. The carrier/cage should have a proper ventilation system on 3 sides for all domestic flights and 4 sides for all international flights.

United Airlines only accepts wood, metal, or hard plastic-made carrier/cage. There should be enough space in the carrier for the pet to stand and move around comfortably without touching the top. Carriers/cages which have a height of more than 34″ and the Series 700 (giant) crates are not allowed for any of the routes with United Airlines.

United Airlines Pet Fee/Cost

According to the United Airlines Policy, the pet fee/cost for traveling in the cabin is $125USD per pet. The charges for the pet travel in the cabin are required to be paid during the check-in process. There is an additional charge/fee of $125 for the flights with more than 4 hours layovers within the United States or more than 24 hours for the regions outside of the United States.
