Everything You Need To Know About Monkeypox Vaccine

A new virus is slowly taking over the world, and we clearly aren’t letting another pandemic hit us. People still haven’t really recovered from what happened during Covid 19 outbreak, and here is another challenge for all of us again.

Monkeypox virus is mostly spread in African countries, but it is slowly entering other places too. In fact, over 80% of the live cases are getting reported in Europe, and it has become the second endemic of Monkeypox after Africa.

Basics and Symptoms of Monkeypox

Monkeypox is a disease that is spread because of the monkeypox virus. It is a part of the smallpox family; however, it is less dangerous than the rest of its members. You might not know this, but this virus also affected people in the 1970s in Central Africa. However, the outbreak was way less and wasn’t spreading much like in 2022.

The current outspread symptoms of Monkeypox include pimple-like rashes on different parts of the body, including sexual areas, fever, body ache, lymph nodes, and tiredness.

It is a virus that can spread from being in close contact with an infected person. This is why it is important that you avoid touching their personal belongings or being in close proximity. Also, being a part of unprotected sex can also infect you if either of the partners has it.

Monkeypox Vaccines

In 1970, Central Africa identified human Monkeypox, and this is why people are more aware, and there are stock up vaccines for the same, even today. Although, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are doing great research on its vaccine. According to the same, the smallpox vaccines are up to 85% effective in protecting people from Monkeypox, the virus being orthopoxviruses family member.

Other than that, there are two vaccines that are for Monkeypox as well as smallpox – Jynneos and ACM2000. Since there were cases of Monkeypox and smallpox that have been existing since the first outbreak, the vaccines were made in 2019 and 2007, respectively.

Jynneos, also named IMVAMUNE or IMVANEX, amongst two is better and more effective. This vaccine was invented by Bavarian Nordic, a Danish company. This one does not have replications, and it is good for people with weak immunity systems. Doctors can give a shot of Jynneos for smallpox as well as Monkeypox. In addition to that, this vaccine stops the virus from spreading further in the human body or to others.

If we talk about ACAM2000, it comes with a few risks. This vaccine shot does not ensure stopping the spread of the virus. Also, its shot leaves a scar on the body and might not really show results in immunocompromised people.

Countries With Monkeypox Vaccine Stocks

After the spread of Monkeypox increased, countries started stocking up on Monkeypox vaccines for severe conditions. However, there are two available vaccines for the same: Jynneos and ACAM2000. But due to the side effects of ACAM2000, big orders have been placed to Jynneos owners since May 2022.

Here is an elaborated table of Monkeypox Vaccine orders received and delivered to various countries up until now (approx).

Summing Up

Monkeypox is spread at a slow pace right now. However, countries are getting themselves prepared and have started a vaccination drive for the people who target the ones who are at a higher risk. Bavarian Nordic is working really hard to create new batches to meet the demand. In addition to that, many countries are also targeting their best scientists to start working on vaccines, especially targeting the Monkeypox virus.

If you are planning to travel out of your country with Flightaura, make sure to take the necessary precautions and keep yourselves and others around you safe. Sanitize, wash hands, and stay at a distance from infected people.
